(extracts)The Turkish cinema industry has recently experienced one of its richest periods in terms of movie production in various genres, and the number of moviegoers in Turkey is on the rise.
But the soaring figures in the number of people watching movies and movies produced do not represent the country's full potential, as there remain many projects awaiting support so that they can be realized. (...)
The state has made attempts to help cinema projects and improve the industry in Turkey through a financial support program of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism's General Directorate of Copyrights and Motion Pictures. But the amount given to each movie is insufficient, and receiving funding is a process riddled with problems.
“Support provided by the ministry can be sufficient, but the only way to achieve this is to form a policy on cinema,” Orhan Eskiköy, one of the co-directors and producers of “İki Dil Bir Bavul,” stressed, adding that movie sponsorships must be encouraged by further legislation.
Suggesting that television stations can cooperate with movie producers and invest the money they spend to make a television series on movies as a solution to financial problems producers encounter, he further said legislation can be passed to set aside government funding. (...)
Egemen Ertürk, producer and director of “Çıngıraklı Top,” pointed out that a cinema culture must be present in Turkey in order for further improve the sector. “While about 30 million movie tickets are sold in Turkey in a year, the number is 370 million for England, whose population is roughly equivalent to that of Turkey. This is an issue related to culture. We see television and cinema as the same thing.” (...)
Ayfer Özgürel, one of the co-producers of director Atıl İnaç's sophomore feature “Büyük Oyun” (A Step into the Darkness), (...) said: “No institution wants to sponsor a documentary or an art film. When we say the movie will be screened in a film festival, they do not want to be a part of it.” Özgürel added that other state institutions must also support movie productions.
The common point on which the directors and producers agree is that financial support extended by the ministry cannot meet the needs of productions if other means of financial support are lacking. They both also say that Turkey needs a better policy on cinema.
